Glory

The Christmas scriptures are full of glory. In Luke 2 glory surrounds the angels and the shepherds. John 1says we have seen it in Jesus. But what exactly is glory? It shines like light, but sometimes it's hidden and needs revealing.  One dictionary says it's the golden ring around Jesus's head in artistic renderings of him. Commentator Warren Wiersbe says glory is "the sum total of all God is and does."

In the song that Common and John Legend sing, it's hope for the future, and strength to remember the past and keep moving forward:

One day when the glory comesIt will be ours, it will be oursOh one day when the war is wonWe will be sure, we will be sureOh glory (glory, glory)Oh (glory, glory)
Hands to the Heavens, no man, no weaponFormed against, yes glory is destinedEvery day women and men become legendsSins that go against our skin become blessingsThe movement is a rhythm to usFreedom is like religion to usJustice is juxtapositionin' usJustice for all just ain't specific enoughOne son died, his spirit is revisitin' usTruant livin' livin' in us, resistance is usThat's why Rosa sat on the busThat's why we walk through Ferguson with our hands upWhen it go down we woman and man upThey say, "Stay down", and we stand upShots, we on the ground, the camera panned upKing pointed to the mountain top and we ran up
One day when the glory comesIt will be ours, it will be oursOh one day when the war is wonWe will be sure, we will be sureOh glory (glory, glory)Oh (glory, glory)
Now the war is not over, victory isn't wonAnd we'll fight on to the finish, then when it's all doneWe'll cry glory, oh glory (glory, glory)Oh (glory, glory)We'll cry glory, oh glory (glory, glory)Oh (glory, glory)
Selma's now for every man, woman and childEven Jesus got his crown in front of a crowdThey marched with the torch, we gon' run with it nowNever look back, we done gone hundreds of milesFrom dark roads he rose, to become a heroFacin' the league of justice, his power was the peopleEnemy is lethal, a king became regalSaw the face of Jim Crow under a bald eagleThe biggest weapon is to stay peacefulWe sing, our music is the cuts that we bleed throughSomewhere in the dream we had an epiphanyNow we right the wrongs in historyNo one can win the war individuallyIt takes the wisdom of the elders and young people's energyWelcome to the story we call victoryThe comin' of the Lord, my eyes have seen the glory
One day when the glory comesIt will be ours, it will be oursOh one day when the war is wonWe will be sure, we will be sureOh glory (glory, glory)Oh (glory, glory)Oh glory (Glory, glory)Hey (glory, glory)
When the war is won, when it's all said and doneWe'll cry glory (glory, glory)Oh (glory, glory)

Thomas Gray's poem "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" says, "The paths of glory lead but to the grave." Human glory doesn't last, but God's glory is eternal.

"The world and all its wanting, wanting, wanting is on the way out—but whoever does what God wants is set for eternity."
1 John 2:‬17 MSG

What God wants is what Jesus told us to do - love. Love God. Love our neighbors.  Love one another.

God is glorified in love. God gives it. We receive it. We share it.

How are you seeing God's glory today?

Thanks, God.
