The Void

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Genesis 1:1-2

I decided to draw the void this morning.  What does the void look like?

Probably nothing. It's empty.

Except that it's not. Genesis says it was without form, and without light, but the Spirit of God was there hovering over the face of the waters.

So there was water?
And there was God's Spirit.

My drawing is nothing but a scribble because a void is nothing.  It's black because there was no light. And it's blue because there was water. The yellow lines are the divinity of God, and the pink lines are the love that is God. The green lines are the future of life that is about to be created.  So my void is not totally void. It's a void with God and with possibilities.

But there was water.  Just floating around in space?

Apparently this is something that scientists have discovered about the universe. There is water everywhere, including at this quasar that is surrounded by a huge amount of water that the quasar itself (basically a black hole) is generating. How cool is that!?!

We need water to live.  Plants and people and animals die without water.  In some parts of the world, there are severe water shortages.  What if scientists figured out how to do what this quasar is doing in order to produce water?  On the other hand, knowing how experiments take trial and error, I don't suppose creating black holes on earth is wise.

Considering how important water is for life, it's kind of wierd how much we use water in ways we don't really need to.  I learned a lot about water usage when I figured out my water footprint on this site.  Mine is on the low side because we don't water our lawn and we don't have a garden to water.  Honestly I think lawns are kind of silly....but I also don't spend time hanging out in my yard. Lawns are good for that. But depending on the weather and bug level, I tend to a-void the outdoors.

In our homes, our biggest water usage is flushing toilets.  The water footprint site encourages the poetic practice "if it's yellow, let it mellow; if it's brown, flush it down."  Why don't we do this more?  Because we prefer to a-void the sight of our own waste, I suppose.

We are way too image conscious.  Here's to more yellow in the toilets and more brown in the lawns. And to bunny trails that end up in the toilet.

Why did I start writing about the void in the first place?  Because the void was how I was describing what was happening in my brain when I went to start writing.  And so just like God created the heavens and earth out of a void, I created this post out of the void.

Thanks, God.
