Building Dreams

For awhile, when I was young, I wanted to be an architect.  My doodles often became floorplans, and I would put myself to sleep by imagining house layouts. One common feature was an octagonal room with large windows and a baby grand piano.

I still enjoy admiring architecture.  My favorite style is romanesque revival. There's an amazing example hiding in the middle of the UTMB hospital campus in Galveston, Texas.
It's called "Old Red" and it was the first building of the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). I never went inside it when we lived there, but it was a special treat whenever visits to UTMB took me by a window that overlooked this beautiful building.

Despite my continuing fascination with architecture, I never took any steps toward becoming an architect. Maybe it was the math or the length of time it would take, or maybe life simply went other directions.

I don't remember ever making a decision about this. I don't think I ever took it that seriously as a career direction.  My current architecture dreams are all about ways to improve our house, but money, energy, strength, and knowledge are all insufficient at this point.  I also like to imagine ways to remodel our church, but those seem even more far off.

Home remodeling is always on my list of things I would do if I had the resources.  What would you put on your list?

“Enlarge your house; build an addition. Spread out your home, and spare no expense!"
Isaiah 54:2 NLT

  1. I also love and appreciate great architecture. I have never had the desire to design, but I love to visit cathedrals and museums and all kinds of beautiful and interesting buildings.
